1 July 1901 — Swinford Old Manor, Ashford, Kent
Monday. 1st [July 1901]. Left Swinford Old Manor directly after breakfast & returned to town with Mr & Mrs Leveson Gower. I had a long talk with her come up in the train & found her to be as good as she is handsome with large ideas of life & desires to do good. Finding they were going to a restaurant to get their luncheon, I begged them to come & lunch here—which they did. Nellie & I dined with the Duncannons, & Pablo Casals also dined there & played the cello to us in the evening quite beautifully. Today was my 58th birthday. Blanche gave me a present as did also Nellie. In the Daily Express there was a small complimentary paragraph on the occasion! What a curious age!!
