24 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 24th [July 1901]. I received a letter from Mr Murray saying he had seen Sir Henry Mansell Thompson, Chief Librarian at the British Museum & asked him why Henry’s bust had been removed from the Hall there & he declared it was still in his place– Mr Murray begged me to find out if this is true. I therefore determined to go myself to see & I took Mary Alderson in a hansom & we went to the Museum. The bust is not visible & I asked an attendant who said it had been removed for a new umbrella stand. Mr. [illegible word] had also written to me that he had seen the said bust on the ground of one of the cellars. As Mary had never been at the Brit. Museum before I took her to see the Nineveh Marbles. From there we went to Cav. Square where I left Mary to luncheon & I went on to Mr Murray to tell him about the bust & came home to lunch. After lunch Eda & I drove to Bethlem to visit the lunatics & gave them all a few flowers. Dr Hyslop being away Dr Craig took us up to the wards & then left us. We returned home by 5 o’clock. Mrs Griscom & her daughter Mrs Bettel came to call & we finally decided with them that Nellie & I should sail for America to pay them a visit on 17th August. Monty Alderson arrived to stay with me the night– Vere, Myles & Irène came to dinner also Nela so we were a party of all very merry & happy reminding me of our generation in our young days. At 10 Eda & I went to the evening party at the Royal Academy where I saw many old acquaintances– Lady Poynter looked very pretty & held a bouquet of pink roses– Both she & Sir Edward received the world very kindly. We got home before 12 o’cl. It rained heavily in A.M.
