25 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 25th [July 1901]. There was a tremendous thunderstorm & it became quite dark. I sat quiet all morng worked while talking to Monty Alderson– After lunch the Aldersons & Nela went off to Waterloo Station. I drove with them to see them off. They went to Inwood to act the Play for Merthyr & Theo. I drove on to Onslow Gardens to call on Connie & sat a little while with her– Then home to tea at 5. Blanche came to see me & when she left at 6.30 I drove to 28 Queen Anne’s Gate to see Mrs Dugdale. She had invited me to go to meet Mrs                Little & Col. Young husband the traveller. Mrs L. has just come home from China. A curious looking woman—very dark & ugly—but seems very intelligent. Col. Y is a spare youngish man modest & quiet—from his manner & appearance one wd never think he had done anything wonderful– Like most English men he took his feats as a matter of course & without any swagger. Lord Percy & Mr W. Peel were there when I arrived but did not remain long. Miss Maud Stanley was there. Said she was at Hatfield on Tuesday & spoke enthusiastically of the Pastoral Play. She said she had taken down an actress to see it who had expressed her astonishment of the perfection of acting of an amateur troupe. I dined alone & went early to bed.
