30 July 1901 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Tuesday. 30th [July 1901]. As Eda was engaged to play in a lawn tennis tournament at Ely I took the opportunity of going over there with her to see the cathedral & Mary accompanied me. We started after an early lunch & went by train. Eda was met by her tennis friends & Mary & I went up to the town in the bus– One of Eda’s friends hearing our errand asked us, very kindly, to go to his father’s house who turned out to be Bishop Mac & he went before us on his bicycle to herald our arrival. The Bishop received us cordially & introduced us to his wife. He then offered to show us the cathedral himself—& for 2 hours took us about to see every thing. It was a great treat for the cathedral is really magnificent & being rather narrow looks longer from the door than almost any church I know. He showed us the little college chapel wh is most interesting also. We admired the outside of the old Palace but as the Bishop & Lady Compton are absent we did not attempt to go in & see it—& indeed should not have had time to do so as the Bishop Mac had to leave us to go to Cathedral service at 4 o’cl. His wife kindly gave Mary & me tea in the garden of her house in the College & then we walked down to the station & took a train abt 5 back to Peterborough. Kate & I went to call on Mr Dack the curator of the Museum who is also Station Master at the line. He showed us some of his own curios & offered to show me over the Museum tomorrow.
