31 July 1901 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Wednesday. 31st [July 1901]. Kate & I took a carriage & drove over to Chesterton to lunch with Monty Alderson. Cecil & the 2 girls met us there having bicycled. After an excellent lunch we sat out in the garden & later drove on to Hadden to see the little church there which Monty has lately restored by subscriptions he raised—& the tiny little rectory he wants to let at £15 a year. It has only 5 bedrooms & is in a field but is rather a nice little place. From there we drove back to Peterborough. In the morning I met Mr Dack & saw his Museum with him. It is now in the old chapel of the school & rather over crowded tho’ interesting. We dined at the Palace Lady Mary Glyn having returned home– Met Revd Kemp & another Revd. Prayers at 10 & afterwards the Bishop took us all into the Cathedral which is always so splendid & effective when seen by moonlight. There we remained some time– I thought of the last time I was there when Henry was with me & we were so impressed. It was a lovely hot clear night tonight.
