7 August 1901 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Wednesday. 7th [August 1901]. Theo took me out driving after lunch to see Purse Caundle a curious old house on a property Merthyr has lately bought. It belonged to an old R.C. family called Huddleston. It is a small E. house– Has a central hall with a minstrel’s gallery—charming queer shaped rooms—2 oak stair cases & 11 different doors to the outside. In the attic was the Chapel. It is all very interesting. Unluckily it lies so low that in the winter it is sometimes almost under water. Merthyr is repairing the house to let it. A lady was looking over it with an idea of taking it. There is a small garden—an orchard & a kitchen garden. I should have loved to have such a house. On our return home to 5 o’cl tea Richard Du Cane arrived to stay a night. He came over from Branksome Dene & gave a rather better account of Maria. I took a stroll with him. We visited Merthyr in the wood where he was working at his grubbing. Theo sitting with her work on a campstool close by. A most devoted couple– She likes to be left alone with him as tho’ they were lovers. The girl finds her own amusements independently. Answer from Emperor & Seckendorff by telegram with thanks.
