8 August 1901 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Thursday. 8th [August 1901]. Found Theo had gone off before breakfast to Bournemouth to arrange their house there which they are going to lend to Connie for a fortnight from next week. Richard & I left by the 12.20 train for Wimborne. He went on back to Bournemouth. I to Canford. Got there while they were at lunch—a large party—mostly boys & girls. Rosie & Francie & all the sons except Henry who is in S. Africa with his regiment. One of the young men played the banjo very well & the whole party sat out on the bowling green singing songs & choruses. It was very hot weather. In the afternoon they went out on expeditions to golf &c in carriages & with a motor car which is a new thing there. Lionel managed & drove it but it was said not to be a very safe machine & not one of the best. After tea I set out to walk up to the kitchen gardens & gathered a few roses to lay on Henry’s tomb– We dined at 8.30 & I sat next to Ivor & as it was a hot night we all walked round the terrace after dinner & sat on the terrace & the banjo & singing began again. Had a talk to Ivor about Arthur’s debts & promised him the receipted bills– Irène Ponsonby who was staying here slept in my room with me. I had the Queen’s room—with the red velvet embroidered panels.
