12 August 1901 — Hurstcote, Shere, Surrey
Monday. 12th [August 1901]. Nellie & Baker returned to town by 10.20 train. I sat talking to Miss Brooke & we made great friends—& I invited her to come with her uncle to stay with me at Venice in Octr. Abt 12 Mrs Rate came to fetch me having driven over from Milton. We paid a short visit to Lady Arthur Russell & then went to Milton. Walked round the garden before lunch. Lord Stanmore arrived to luncheon & to stay with the Rates. I left Dorking by 4.50 train & returned home. Found a touching little note written in pencil from Princess Victoria saying “forgive these lines in pencil but I want to thank you with all my aching heart for yr loving lines of sympathy. Oh how can one realize what has taken place—the yearning to have her back—the awful blank she has left—the happy home that was—empty & gone for ever! How she loved you! God help us & bless you—yr affe sorrow V. Adria. Mollie (Lady Humphery) came to dine as she is up in town to see after Charlie A. her brother. Connie also came to dine. She leaves town for B’mouth tomorrow. She was terribly depressed & unnerved– It was sad to see her. She came here before I returned & sat an hour with Nellie pouring out her grief. I hope the change will do her good poor thing. I fear she is kicking against the pricks.
