21 August 1901 — En route to United States
Wednesday. 21st [August 1901]. Perfectly smooth but still very cold. Stayed late in bed for warmth’s sake. Sat in Nellie’s cabin all afternoon talking & working till 5 o’cl—when we went to tea with Mrs Bettle & then walked for exercise on deck. Passed several vessels & saw a bird flying over the water which relieved the monotony of the immense ocean– As there has been little sunshine the last 2 days it made it even more monotonous. After dinner we all sat in the drawing room– Mrs Bettle talked to me about my brother Arthur & how much she had liked him & felt for his troubles in life. I amused them with tales about my black servant Jerry. We sat in the saloon for ½ hour before bed time listening to the steward playing the organ– After all he is not really a fine player though he gave us pleasure. 493.
