28 August 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Wednesday. 28th August [1901]. Nellie accompanied Mrs Griscom into Philadelphia by a morning train to shop & for Nellie to have her hair curled at the hairdressers. I remained quiet & when I was dressed & went downstairs I took to practising the “pianola” a sort of harmonium which one attaches to the pianoforte & by working the bellows one can play the piano—& even give a good deal of expression. At 1.30 I drove to the Bettle’s house & there met Mrs G. & Nellie & lunched with her. Eat nice American dishes “Ice cream”—green corn &c excellent & unwholesome– Mrs Bettle has a charming little house on the grounds of Dolobran– Mrs Griscom took us for a drive & was to take us to tea at the Country Club but we passed a Polo game & stopped to see the play which was very interesting to me as I had never had seen the game played before– We then drove back to Dolobran–
