31 August 1901 — Aboard Alert, Long Island Sound
Saturday. 31st August [1901]. With a nice light breeze we sailed along the Sound all the morning by lovely villas with green lawn down to the water’s edge. We chatted—read, slept & eat a great deal. After lunch we got out of the sound into the Atlantic where there was a perceptible swell & some of us were not as happy as they might have been & disappeared into different lairs. We had to round Point Judith which owing to the swell & the tide was always an unpleasant place, so we were told & we were glad when we rounded into Newport Bay & found ourselves in perfectly smooth water. We had to thread our way through a mighty fleet of big steam yachts before we came to anchor. It is a lovely spot a large bay with beautiful villas on the rockbound shore. There has been a lovely harvest moon these last 3 nights which added much to the beauty of our voyage.
