30 August 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Friday. 30th [August 1901]. Mr Griscom went off to N. York by an early train– Mrs G., Nellie & I followed by a 9.10 train. At Phila we got into a Pullman car & sat in armchairs & in 2 hours found ourselves in N. York. We at once took a carriage & went off shopping. First to a Mrs Lynch’s shop where Mrs Griscom said we were likely to find some 2nd hand jewelry now that the Spanish ladies at Cuba were impoverished by the late war there & were selling their jewels. My brother Merthyr had asked me to look out for such a thing– We found one thing which we thought might suit & I found a baroque pearl drop which I was looking for myself & I got it for £10 for myself– We went afterwards to a large furniture store where Mrs G. bought something & thence to Delmonicos for luncheon. Mr G. père met us there & we had a most sumptuous meal in a restaurant full of small tables & many parties of ladies & gentlemen at lunch. Delmonicos seemed to me a big hotel– I had so often heard of this place & read of it that I was curious to see it. Directly after lunch we drove to a ferry & went across to a railway station & took a train for Whitestone a small place on the sound where Mr G’s launch was waiting to convey us on board the yacht “Alert” a schooner of 95 tons most comfortably fitted up & with 6 cabins. There was a delicious little breeze & we sailed along merrily in perfectly smooth waters.
