15 September 1901 — Buffalo
Sunday. 15th September [1901]. Nellie having determined to return by today’s train to Philadelphia Mr Williams saw her off by a 9 o’cl train which took her back by 7 this evening & she will get to Haverford in time for sleeping there. Mrs Williams, Emilia Riaño, Juan & Aubrey & I went out for a drive at 11 o’cl to see something more of the town & finding ourselves in Delaware Avenue & learning that the President’s body was to be carried from the house he died in to the City Hall there to be laid in state, we determined to wait & see the procession pass. We drew our carriage into a side street & sat for an hour waiting. At abt 12.30 there was a stir amongst the people standing & we heard the strain of Chopin’s Funeral March. Emilia, Juan & I jumped out of the carriage & went to stand on the curb stone—there were a few city police but there was no special crowd & no pushing. A few companies of soldiers led the way before the funeral car which was simple & through the glass case one could only see the American flag with which the casket as they here call a coffin was entirely covered– The sad faces of the soldiers & the simplicity of the procession was very impressive. After the coffin came the veterans of the U.S. Army—& then different people, ministers, senators, relatives &c in closed carriages—the ladies of whom there were a few even not in mourning. After seeing this procession we proceeded back to the car & after lunch took our drive to see the outside of the Pan American Exhibition. The Electric tower wh resembles the Giralda at Seville & the fine Dome of the Temple of Music where the poor President was shot made a fine effect over the bridge & piece of water of the Park. There was such a crowd in the streets near the City Hall where the President’s body is lying that we had to make a round to get back to where our car was stationed. We found on getting to the yard that our car had disappeared so we drove back to the N. York Central Station & found it was there. We started for Montreal via Toronto at 7 P.M.
