16 September 1901 — Montreal
Monday. 16th September [1901]. At abt 8 A.M. we found ourselves at Montreal Station. We then dressed had breakfast & drove off in two detachments to see the town. We went into the R.C. Cathedral which was fine as to size but in bad modern Gothic taste. We drove up the Mont Royal Park at the top of which there is a most splendid view of the town & the surrounding country & river. There was a strong wind & rain threatened but luckily it held off & we got home to our “Rambler Car” to lunch at 1.30 after driving about the town & seeing the outsides of the public buildings. The town is gay with decorations and flags & triumphal arches which are being raised to welcome the Duke & Dss of Cornwall & York on Wednesday. They are now at Quebec on their return journey from Australia & the British possessions. Emilia Riaño was not feeling well so did not go out again in afternoon & we all went without her to the fur shop where Mrs Williams was bent on looking for some winter furs for herself. We bought some silver fox fur that Pansie Griscom had commissioned us to get for her & paid $275 for a muff & boar for silver fox of the 2nd quality. We went back to the Rambler & Juan & I took Emilia out for a short walk & bought a large basket of grapes for ¼ dollar. We dined before we started from Montreal at 8.30 & as we went along to Quebec we saw a beautiful aurora borealis in the sky wh lasted some 2 hours. Our car was stationary some part of the night & there were hideous noises in the station & we were pushed backward & forward till we got in place for the Quebec train.
