18 September 1901 — En route to New York
Wednesday. 18th [September 1901]. After travelling all night we got a newspaper & found that the lying in state of the President had been at Washington yesterday & he is to be buried tomorrow at Canton in Ohio. Emilia Riaño seemed a little better in the morng but I found she has got dyssentery. We managed while stopping at Albany to send out to buy some “Paragoric” as recommended by Mrs Williams. It seemed to do a little good & by the time we reached N. York at 8.50 we were glad to leave the train. We dined on the Rambler so we had only to go straight to bed when we got to the Waldorf Hotel—a huge building of about 15 stories high. It is the newest & most fashionable hotel now in N. York & seemed like a town in itself. The corridors were full of smart people sitting about. We took leave of the Williams who were going on to Haverford by an early train tomorrow.
