19 September 1901 — New York
Thursday. 19th [September 1901]. The Riaños & I had intended to go to the Museum together but found that every thing in the city was shut all today out of respect to the funeral of the President—besides Emilia was so ill in the night that I only thought of getting her to Dolobran safely—so we left by 10.50 train for Philadelphia & got the 1.15 train there for Haverford. Mr Williams was in that train & travelled with us. We took a cab at Haverford & drove to Dolobran & found the family at lunch & received a warm welcome. I got Mrs Griscom to send for a doctor for Emilia & when he came he ordered her to keep her bed & said it would be a long affair. He even spoke of taking her to his hospital. We walked to Mrs Williams to enquire after her & found she was also knocked up & was reading. The weather was very cold & the changes from the heat of the beginning of the week very trying. Out of respect to the murdered President at the hour of the funeral every wheel in the country was to be silent for 10 minutes in the afternoon just at the time that the body was laid in the grave– There were services in the morning in all the churches of every denomination. Mr Griscom & Mr Bettle were at home all day as there was no business done–
