20 September 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Friday. 20th [September 1901]. I breakfasted in my room. Emilia was a little better so the Dr said when he came. He wants her to have a nurse but she does not wish it & my maid good Baker is very pleased to look after her. Mr Griscom went to Philadelphia in the morning. I sat with Emilia & while she dosed I wrote & worked. After lunch Mrs Griscom had a messenger arrive with some fine old Spanish jewellery which Mrs Ludlow the widow of Genl Ludlow had bought in Cuba during the late war & which she wants to sell. It is very fine old 17th century jewelry rose diamonds & set in silver– It is to cost £500. My brother Merthyr told me to try & get him some old Spanish jewelry & I said I am sure he would like to buy it, so Mrs Griscom sent it in to Philadelphia to be cleaned up for Mr Griscom to be the better able to decide about in in the evening. The Riaños say it is very fine & advise me to buy it. At 5 Mrs Griscom, Juan, Nellie & I drove to call on Mrs Quesatt close by here. We found a stately lady at home & she kindly gave us tea & then we walked back to Dolobran. Mr Griscom passed us on his way from the station & got out of the carriage & walked with us. Juan, Nellie & I took a walk in the quarry garden & then went to the stable yard & had a long talk with Augustus the coachman. He was very amusing & spun yarns abt his friends in Ireland & Swansea & the old country, but said he had been with Mr Griscom 31 years & America is his home! Mr & Mrs Williams & the latter’s brother dined here & Mr & Mrs Rodman Griscom. Pansie tried over “coon” songs after dinner I playing her accompaniment– Some of the songs are lovely.
