25 September 1901 — Dolobran, Haverford, Pennsylvania
Wednesday. 25th [September 1901]. Nellie & I had been invited by Mrs Williams to a luncheon party she gave in our honor at the Ladies Club the “Acorn” in Philadelphia today at 1.15. Nellie was going to N. York to see the yacht race between the Columbia & the Shamrock. The Wideners had invited her & Juan Riaño on board the Josephine their yacht. Juan, Nellie & I went in to Phila by train—& Juan deposited us at the Acorn. The secretary is a learned lady called Mrs Stephenson & she was anxious to know how I was related to the great archeologist. She was duly impressed at learning that I am his wife– There were a great many other ladies to meet me whose names I cannot remember, all very very kind & complimentary to me. The club is a charming house fitted up with good taste & comfort. The lunch was served on the 2nd floor at 3 small tables. I sat at one with Mrs Williams by my side—Nellie at another. We had excellent food & I tasted grape fruit for the first time. I thought it nice but rather insipid. As the meal lasted some time Mrs Williams changed her place with other ladies from time to time– Juan fetched away Nellie before lunch was over to take her off to N. York, so I returned to Dolobran with Mrs Williams.
