15 October 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 15th [October 1901]. Started the four servants off to Venice—the cook & kitchenmaid, the butler & footman. They left at 11 & will travel via Bale & Milan & arrive at Venice on Thursday morng at 4 A.M. I went out shopping with Eda & we went to Shaftesbury Avenue in search of a birdshop. There I bought an Australian Joey—not very wild tho not really tame—but I hope to tame it. Sir Henry Thompson came to see me & arrived in his motor car his last new toy. Altho’ now 82 he likes to have the last new invention. He took Nellie off for a drive. Nellie, Eda & I dined at Hotel Victoria with Duncannon. Met Elaine & Ernest Villiers, Lionel Guest, young Rothschild & Vere & Myles Pon: A fine large hotel & a big dining room. A band of music played behind a screen so it was not too loud. After dinner we had coffee in a private room & Elaine sang comic songs excruciatingly to a piano wh was there– We returned home at eleven. Blanche is in Dublin staying with Onie for her confinement.
