24 October 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 24th [October 1901]. Emilia went out for the whole day on a trip by steamer to Burano & Torcello. Mr S. Cocks came in the morng to look at the pictures & later Mr Gatliff came & he gave me a good many of his interesting photos: I begged him to stay to luncheon with me which he did & he told me many interesting things about the Transvaal War & the difficulties of transport &c. We talked about Sir Redvers Bullers foolish speech & that the Govt had taken his command in England away in consequence. It is said that he committed a breach of discipline which could not be overlooked. There is a good deal of excitement in England abt it. His soldiers are devoted to him personally. I went out after 3 to see the Curtis & then I went to a meeting at the Unione per il Bene where no real business was done– Mme Giacomelli proposed a ridiculous idea that we should help in founding a good newspaper– When asked what funds the Society had it was deduced to be 50 lire! The motion was unanimously condemned. In the evening I went to Lady Radnor’s at home & heard her & Mr Byard sing. She has arranged her apartment, the entresol of the Da Mula Palazzo very nicely– The sala is 112 ft long & is made to look both comfortable & pretty. At the canal end she has made a raised dais where she has her writing table & she there sits & can look out on the canal grande. I had not heard her sing before tonight & was delighted with her style & piano playing but her voice is very passée & she no longer sings true. Mr Byard has a very nice voice & is still young. He has come to Venice to study under Prof. Cohen who promises to train his baritone voice so as to make a tenor of it.
