8 December 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 8th December [1901]. Sophy had had a bad night so could not go to church. I went alone & walked home– Coming away from church I met the Montalbas & went with them to their house to fetch my water colour box wh Clara has kindly filled fresh for me– On the way there we heard music in St Agnese & going in found a service going on—with many lighted candles & white vestments today being the fête of the Immaculate Conception. A fiction of the Romish church for which there is not the faintest foundation. Mrs Eden came to see Sophy after lunch. Mr Brown lunched with us in order to talk to Sophy. At 3 I went off to see Marchesa Cassis who is laid up more or less & is going to have a baby. I found her rather disturbed as to whether she ought to let the coming infant be a R. Catholic or follow her in the Protestant religion– She asked my advice & it was difficult to give it– I suggested if a girl it should be a Protestant & if a boy an R.C. She justly said she saw no reason why she should let the boy for worldly reasons be brought up in the less good religion. I went from her to call on the Miss Wests & found them at home– We dined at 6.45 & then Mr Murray & I went with Mr & Mrs Harston for whom I had sent the gondola to the sailor’s Institute for the evening service. There were only 3 mates but with my servants & us we made up a congregation—& got home abt 9.
