5 January 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 5th [January 1902]. Still thick white fog but it lifted in time for me to go to church. After service I walked with Carry Eden to her door & then to Hotel Victoria to call on Baroness Reinelt & sat some while talking with her. Told her how the money she gave me for the poor had been expended for the New Year. We talked much about the low tone of society here & how it shocked her. She said that yesterday in her rooms she had a lot of the ladies with her & they talked of a certain Ct Arrivabene who is engaged to marry one of the Papadopoli twins– Countess Morosini (la bella contessa) said he was un uomo di “esprit”—Mme Reinelt seeming surprised—the Css said “Yes he says such rude clever things”—& then she went on to tell the assembled company that when the young daughter of Css Valmarana was complaining that her dress did not fit & did not please her, he answered, oh anything you have on pleases me—even if you had nothing on.” &c. The Baroness said she saw no cleverness in that just insolence! & she is right. If this is the tone here how can we get on with Venetian society. I dont believe they are as bad really as would seem but they are not refined. I got home just in time for lunch & after lunch Emilia & I went off to the Liceo Concert. Bossi played the organ finely but the concert was dull. A young lady made her debut on the piano & a clever young violinist Serato by name played well—but the choice of music was dull & Bossi’s compositions not adapted to the organ.
