11 January 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 11th [January 1902]. The fog continues & is thicker, whiter, denser than ever. We worked at the letters all the morning. After lunch we went to call on Countess Canevaro whose “day” it is. A good [many] people came there. Today her husband had been receiving farewell visits from the naval authorities here—his command of the Arsenal is at an end & he leaves for Rome tomorrow. He has only a year’s more employment at Rome & then his career is over & he has to retire. Italy will lose a good officer. He is a solid & good man & there are not many like him. He is small—dark—olive complexion showing his Peruvian birth. He is not unlike the pictures of Napoleon I & by curious coincidence he was christened Napoleon– From there we went to see Marchesa Cassis & were refreshed by the sight of the pretty dainty English woman. She is in trouble about her father who is ill in Calabria & the Prefect has gone off to see him. Visit from Iduna– Read aloud in eveng from Villari’s Savonarola– All the next week Emilia & I worked every morning at tying up & docketting & looking through Henry’s correspondence. It was pretty hard work but we persevered & did it on.
