13 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 13th [February 1902]. The Bishop of Peterborough lunched with us & we afterwards took him to Palazzo Vendramin where there was a party in celebration of the death of Wagner the musician who died in that house on this day. Princess Polignac née Singer (of the sewing machines) contributed 400 lire in memory of her late husband—that Wagner’s death should be recorded by the playing of a selection of his music near the house where he died. The Duke della Grazia therefore permitted the town band to play in his courtyard & the Dss invited all Venice society to be present. I believe Pss Polignac is arranging to contribute a sum down that this may be done in perpetuity. There were so many people in the rooms all talking that although the windows were open one could not distinguish the music but we had refreshments—& Emilia & I went round the palazzo & enjoyed the pretty & interesting things in it– Many fans, pictures, miniatures &c which had belonged to the Duke’s mother the Dsse de Berri. We also visited the uninhabited rooms where there are fine leather hangings but which require suitable furniture. We got home by 5 when we had a Sailor’s Institute Committee meeting—Mrs Eden, Mr Harston, Zuccato, Hulton. Later Mr Byard called & sat a long time chatting. In the evening Emilia & I went to hear the Spanish Farzuela at the Rossini with the Belmondos. Music lively & acting passable– We were kept waiting an hour before the play began & an actor came forward to explain that they were waiting for their costumes from the railway station. I was told that the barge containing the poor things boxes was at the Riva of the theatre just as the public was disembarking. The theatre was full & Don Carlos & his wife were in a box near us.
