8 March 1902 — Rome
Saturday. 8th [March 1902]. Breakfast in my room– Wrote letters. Went at 11 to see Sophy & sat with her an hour found her better & cheerful. At 12 walked out & went to Piazza Paganica to lunch at 1 with Donna Laura Minghetti. She was quite alone. We had an exquisite petit dejeuner. Her house is full of lovely things. Her big salon quite a beautiful thing 2 stories high & fine carved ceiling. After lunch I went next door to Pal. Caetani to see the Dss di Sermoneta who received me warmly & we had a nice chat about politics, society &c. She gives a doleful view of the state of affairs in Italy. The King entirely in the hands of the Radical govt—strikes imminent—the people discontented both respectable & socialistic—& a revolution supposed to be in the air. Da Laura called for me in her carriage & took me for a drive in Villa Corsini & we called on the French Ambassadress but she did not receive. Donna Laura left me at my hotel & after a few minutes’ rest I went on foot to Pal. Sciarra to have tea with Mme Pasolini. After a short time in walks Da Laura! We neither had said to each other that we were engaged to go at 5 to Css Pasolini or we should have gone there together. I walked back to the hotel, stopping at a bonnet shop to show them my capotte which my fellow traveller had admired on Thursday– She wanted to have one made like it & told me the name of her bonnet maker in Via Frattina. I dined at 7. Saw Ct de Franqueville & also the Bishop– Sat with Sophy after dinner till 10 when I retired to my room & to patience.
