7 March 1902 — Rome | |
Friday. 7th [March 1902]. Got up rather late. Sophy sent me down word not to try to see her before 11 but I could not then go to her as at that moment Donna Laura Minghetti came to see me—kind & affectionate as ever. She carried me off with her for a drive on the Pincio which was lovely as ever, although there was not much sunshine. She left me at the Curtis’ door in Pa de Spagna on our return– I did not see Mrs C. as she was unwell & not up so I promised to return later & went home to the hotel. I found Sophy in her little room on the top (5th) floor in my hotel. Dressed but lying on her bed saying she was better but felt very weak after her long late cold—but since Mrs C. had written to me to say she was anxious abt Sophy she has seen an English Dr and he has taken her in hand. I went to lunch at 1 at the table d’hôte & had a table to myself. I saw the Bp of Gibraltar who is staying in the hotel & had some talk with him on the Sailor’s Institute affairs at Venice. The poor little man looked more forlorn & pinched than ever now that he has lost his handsome young wife. It made ones heart ache for him. He is going [on] his diocesan tour as far as Odessa & has a brother with him. At 3 I went for a walk to leave a card at Pal. Sciarra on Css Pasolini– At her door I met her & we flew into each other’s arms & embraced in the street. I promised to go again to see her. I walked to the Via Nazionale & called on Mme Hurtado. She is too unwell to see me but I saw her daughter Idita & Mr Hurtado. Then walked back to the Hotel & had tea with Sophy & sat with her till dinner. I dined at my little table. Had a visit there from Count de Franqueville a well known french man who is a great deal in England & speaks English well– Then I sat a while with Sophy in the evening– Played patience & went early to bed. | |
