21 March 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 21st March [1902]. Modelled all the morning. After lunch went off with Baker to the hospital to pay my usual visit. Then the gondola left me at the Piazza & I walked home. Near here I met Signor Guggenheim & told him that I wanted to see the Art school at the Carmine while the students were there. He said that this was the last week of evening classes & so I settled to go with him this evening. I fetched him at 7.15 & took him to the Carmine in my gondola. There were a great many lads there & they were all of them drawing capably each boy learning the style that was most useful to his trade, wood carver, jeweller &c. The worst of it is that when they were told to make an original composition their taste is so bad & the professors even worse. One young man was modelling a figure of a miner axe in hand who was supposed to have discovered & to be guarding over a mine of jewels & there was a hole made to contain the jewels of some fair lady! After going round the classes & shaking hands with the Professors we returned to our homes & our dinners–
