8 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 8th [April 1902]. Letter from Elaine saying she & Ernest will arrive on Friday. Pasquale has influenza of wh there seems a good deal about. Last afternoon M. Le Mallier came to see me & brought a Mme de Broutelles to call. Her husband was secretary in the French Embassy at Madrid in our time & died soon after at Madrid & she is now a rich widow & talks of coming to settle here. She keeps her looks wonderfully well. Da Laura also came to bid me good bye as she & her daughter left today for Rome. I accompanied her in gondola to the Piazza where we walked & poked about in the Spaderia shops of old silver but bought nothing. Then I left her at her hotel & walked home. In the street we came upon Herr Ludwig Passini & he promised to pay me a visit which he did this morning. I told him what I had done about his portrait of the Empress belonging to the Bentivoglios—how they would allow him to copy it but he said he could not do this as he never could make any copy but he might get a Venetian artist to do so. Mattei the Engineer came to see me & take my final orders for the summer in what requires doing in the house. Countess Emo came to luncheon with me having come in for a couple of days from Fanzolo. She was most friendly & pleasant & we swore eternal friendship. Her son Carlo came to fetch her afterwards– At 3 I went out in gondola to call on Bss Reinelt who returned 2 days ago from Trieste & then went to the Edens garden. It was a lovely day but there was a cold spring wind. Then arrived there a Mr & Mrs Noel on their honeymoon tour. Mrs N. was née Cockerell & I had met her this summer at the Poet Laureate’s whose niece she is. Came home at 5 had tea in studio & modelled till dinner time. Received in evening Css Albrizzi & her daughter & Css Valmarana & her daughter besides Iduna & a few men came & it was midnight when they left.
