11 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 11th [April 1902]. I went to the hospital directly after lunch. When I got to the top of the stairs going to the ward I usually visit I found the old lame soldier whom I have often seen there waiting for me to tell me that in the Protestant ward there were 2 sick Englishmen. I had read about their accident in the mornings newspapers & had intended to look for them. I found them very pleased to have a visit—one of them very badly burnt– They said they were very kindly treated but had never been washed since they got taken there 4 days ago! When my round was over I left the gondola at the Piazza. Went to see Bss Reinelt who was alone & had some curious talk with her. She told me the ladies of society here are jealous of her friendship with me—& cannot understand why we get on—& then she went on to tell me that they said I am “grande dame” but very superba and that they cannot get on with me & ended by saying “enfin elle nous glace”! How curious it is how little one knows oneself. I seem to take so much trouble to be civil to them & I fail so entirely! It is humiliating! Iduna came to dine with me– George Montagu (M.P.) arrived at midnight fm the South to stay with me—but I did not wait up for him.
