12 April 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 12th [April 1902]. Tea in my room at 7—& then English breakfast at 9. George M. sat & talked with me till 11 & then went out. There was a meeting in this house of the Italians who are interested in the regeneration of the Venezia Murano Glass Co under the Hamilton’s presidence. I stayed in the 2nd drawing room waiting till it was over to hear the result. The whole company—abt 10 of them—came in to [illegible word] me—but I could only gather they had decided to do nothing & they all went off & Mr H. said he will come to see me on Monday. Lunched at 1– Elaine & Ernest Villiers arrived from Rome by 2.30 train to stay with me. They have been spending the winter in Cairo. We all went out in gondola to the Piazza & George & I returned at 5 to tea. Baroness Hellenbach & her daughter, Mr de Zuccato & Marchese Bentivoglio called– George M. brought an interesting book called “Anticipations” by Wells which we discussed & began to read together–
