12 May 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 12th [May 1902]. Set my typewriter going again & resumed copying Henry’s letters– These days are full of the horror of the overwhelming & destruction of the town of St Pierre in the Island of Martinique with 40000 people only 30 people having survived. There seem also to have been 700 killed at St Vincent– It really seems as if the end of the world was approaching. Such things are really appalling! too terrible. I drove with Blanche in the afternoon & at 4 left her & came home to tea in a cab. I dined with her & Edward & met Mr Arnold Marley.
