24 May 1902 — Paris
Saturday. 24th May [1902]. It was suddenly hot today & trying after the cold of the last month. Kate & I went off to Mlle Michaud 41 B Capucines to try on the gowns I ordered when last I was in Paris. One is a splendid black damask with a black lace tablier & the fashion is a tremendously long train behind. I generally buy 2 new gowns a year—this year I shall have 3 made—one all with my own black lace. I had a headache & so had the dressmaker & we were both glad when the thing was over & we returned to our hotel to lunch. Afterwards we took a walk Kate & I went to search in vain for a French nursery maid for Elaine & then took a fiacre & went to call on Mme Taine. She was just starting to go out & met me at the door & at once invited us to lunch tomorrow. We took a little walk in the Tuilleries to see the Bird charmer a man who feeds the sparrows & has given them names to wh they answer & come to be fed. Mrs Thackeray Ritchie who was yesterday at our hotel came in to see us & told us what an interesting thing it was to see & then we went on to the hotel & dined & I read French to Kate in the evening.
