26 May 1902 — Paris | |
Monday. 26th [May 1902]. We went today at 12.30 to lunch with Adeline Dss of Bedford at Hotel Ritz. It is the newest most fashionable hotel in Paris & managed on the same plan as the American Hotels & is the great rendezvous for English smart ladies at tea time. Afterwards we were shopping in the Rue Rivoli to make small purchases. At 4.30 we called at 1 Rue d’Aguesseau & picked up Mr Byard who lives there & took him to have tea with Mme Lacroix. The Bompards also met us there & we heard Mlle Morphy sing. It was a sort of trial of her voice & I was dismayed to find how indifferent it was– I fear the poor girl will never earn a livelihood by her singing as she is in hopes of doing & her disappointment will be great. Kate & I walked back from the Avenue Messine to our hotel St Romain– Dined there & I read aloud to her in the evening. | |
