Thursday. 5th [June 1902]. The news of Maria was still alarming tho’ sometimes she is thought to be a little better—still those of her children who are not at Bournemouth with her were sent for & the end cannot be far. Onie Oranmore came to see me in the morning. After lunch I went to see Mr Dent the published at his office in Bedford Street Covent Garden– He had begged me to come that he might show me some drawings he wished to give to me for the benefit of some institution at Venice. I told him about our proposed International Hospital & he at once took a lively interest in it & promised to help me to get up an Art Exhibition & sale for it in my house in July & to give me some books of his publication. I got home early & at my door met Mrs J. Ball who paid me a long visit & after her came Lady Waldegrave & we had a long talk about her sister Sophy Palmer. Louis Du Cane called to say he thought his mother was dying. Nellie was laid up with a bad headache & I dined alone–
