6 June 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 6th [June 1902]. A telegram from Bournemouth this morning told me that all is over & that Maria died last night & after two years terrible sufferings she is at rest—& our family circle from ten is now diminished to seven—& the first of the 5 sisters has gone. She was always kind gentle & helpful to me & we were particularly attached to each other. In the days when her numerous family were grown up she used to talk over their future plans & aims in life, which her husband left mostly to her to decide. She was a reserved & rather timid nature & life was not easy to her– To me she was motherly & kind even from my earliest days. Merthyr & Theo came in the course of the morning to talk over the sad event– Then Blanche came & she lunched with me & we went on together to see Ivor & Cornelia & talk of it with them. Cornelia took me out driving with her in her electric brougham. They are most pleasant vehicles & are now coming into general use– We went to see Elaine Villiers who is laid up in a Nursing Home with a bad throat & I got home abt 5 to tea–
