14 July 1902 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 14th [July 1902]. I dined at Wimborne House this evening & sat next to Lord Wemyss a very old friend of Henry’s—who when over 80 married a second time & is a wonderful old man now. He turned to me & said “Well what do you say about the poor Campanile?” I did not understand & so he explained that it had fallen down! The shock & horror of it was great—one cannot believe it. That that 1000 year old tower is now but a heap of dust! What can Venice be like without it—the great feature of the place—seen from nearly every part of the town. Happily no deaths are reported– Our dear Venetian’s supineness has found them out at last & this may stir them up for a bit! It is incredible.
