26 July 1902 — Garry Hill, Bagenalstown, County Carlow | |
Saturday. 26th [July 1902]. We all left for Bessborough driving in Irish cars to Bagenalstown & went by train to within an hour’s drive of that place. It was a great excitement to show me the new loggia out of the gallery with steps down to the garden which Edward & Blanche have just built & which is a great improvement to the house. There are also improvements in the garden & the place is improved every time I see it. For the first few days we were without Edward who joined us later from London– Bertie also came having just left Harrow for good. I helped Blanche to arrange things in the house & to complete the border on the portiere of the dining room which I had embroidered for her. One day the new motor car arrived from London & it was a great excitement to us as well as to the people of the village it being quite a novelty to many. I did not much enjoy going out in it. It is rather disagreeable to me to be rushed so quickly through the country & I see no pleasure in the thought that we got over 4 miles in 9 minutes—as I was not in a hurry to get anywhere.
