3 October 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Friday. 3rd October [1902]. Mrs Fortescue of Boconnor came with Evely Eliot to stay with me. They are great friends & always together. Mrs F. is a very pretty young woman née Horte– I began my Tuesday evening receptions which continued all the winter. I also had 4 Friday evenings dedicated to classical trios. The violinist Cassellari—Dini the ’cellist & Trombini pianist & director. Lady (Mary) Galloway came to Venice with a nephew Mr Jack Cecil & I saw a good deal of her. Dorothy Fortescue & Evely stayed abt 3 weeks & early in Novr the Poynters (Sir Edward & Lady) came to stay. They remained but a few days owing to the illness which overtook Sir Edward at Rome & kept them there. Mr Robert Wallace stayed with me a week on his way to Bombay where he is one of a firm of merchants. Mr & Mrs Val Prinsep came to stay at Venice & took an apartment on the Zattere. He is an old friend—she good looking kindly & jolly & they contribute much to our little society here & we see a good deal of them– One evening Val P. gave a lecture on painting at the Philological Society wh we all attended– He returned to London to fetch his 2 Eton boys & brought them back to spend Christmas– | |
