10 January 1903 — Milan
Saturday. 10th [January 1903]. Pouring wet morning—no moving out. Lunch at 10.30– Went to the station at 12 & left by 12.40 train for Bâle where we arrived at 7.40– There was a restaurant car where we got a good dinner. At Bâle waited in a bare comfortless waiting room till we left by 11.40 train for Boulogne in the sleeping car. I had a berth in a compartment with another lady who was very obliging & pleasant. Got to Boulogne abt 1 on Sunday & waited ½ hour for the Paris train & then started in steamer for Folkestone. Had a private cabin & slept– It was very cold & rather rough. Reached London abt 4 & found Nellie at 3 Savile Row & also my brother Monty.
