30 January 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 30th [January 1903]. Count de Franqueville called in the morning to consult me about presents for him to give Sophy as “corbeille.” He said she had asked for a row of pearls & he had been seeing all the pearls in London & was astonished at the prices asked—that there seemed to be nothing good under £2 or £3000! I told him I was sure Sophy would not like him to spend that sum on a thing to hang round her neck & advised him to wait. Mr Maut, Verona Brooke, Mary Alderson & Nela came to luncheon. I drove Verona home at 3 & then went to enquire at Mrs Fildes how her boy is who has undergone his 4th operation for appendicitis. Glad to find he was out of danger now. I went on to Hammersmith intending to call on Lady Richmond but searched in vain for the house so had to return home without doing so. Home to tea. Col. Cuthbertson & Mr Watt came to call– I dined alone & wrote letters in evening.
