25 March 1903 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 25th [March 1903]. Today I opened my sale of drawings at 2 & sold a few things. Connie helped & sat at the top of the stairs keeping the accounts & receiving the money—but I got on pretty well taking about £60. I went to dine with the D. & Dss of Somerset where there was a large party to meet Joe Chamberlain & his wife. Genl Ian Hamilton took me into dinner—Genl French was also there—Lady Aberdeen & many others—amongst them the American Minister & Mrs Choate. I did not have a very amusing eveng. Genl Sir Ian Hamilton may be a very fine soldier but he is not a good talker & he knew nothing about me & took no interest in me & mostly talked to his right hand neighbour Mrs Choate who seemed to be very agreeable– In the drawing room afterwards I talked to Lady Aberdeen about Sophy’s marriage & to Mrs Chamberlain who is a dear little woman & always pleasant to talk to & nice to look at. Chamberlain had come up from the House in morning dress & after dinner returned to the House without coming to the drawing room– At 11 I went on to the Duncannon ball at 17 Cavendish Square & stayed there about an hour & then came home to bed.
