Tuesday. 31st March [1903]. The morning post brought a long letter of explanation & apology from Mr M. I wrote a short matter of fact letter—advised him not to cut his friends in consequence of what had happened—& then I dismissed the thing as much as I can from my mind—but still it gives me a longing & a heartache to feel that Henry’s loving care no longer can help me here on earth & I feel sore & hurt & miss him more than ever. It is not reasonable perhaps—but in this I cannot reason—& the old wound bleeds again– Mary Alderson came to lunch with me & drove with me & we went to call on Mrs Morgan Richards & found her at home. She has a beautiful house but full of the queerest things—some artistic some commonplace. I talked to her after Mary went off to join Onie, about Henry & my happy married life & it did me good & helped to calm me–
