8 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 8th [July 1903]. Pope still living & better & has had an operation to relieve him. The faithful call it a miracle! It was fine this morning & one hoped the weather was settled. I went out at 4 as far the Stabto V. Murano to send off Mr Woods’ beads—& was going on to the Piazza but turned home as a thunderstorm threatened & I got in just as it began to pour. The storm came up later as black as ink with big hail stones wh broke some peoples windows. It was curious to see how the hailstones made the water jump up like a fountain as they fell into the canal– It was quite cold in the evening.
