11 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 11th [July 1903]. It is quite hot once more & I did not move out all day. Painted—wrote—did accounts—paid bills– After 5 o’cl tea had a visit from Ersilia Canevaro & we went out together to the Eden’s garden & finding them alone sat in the cool of the evening on the sacca overlooking the lagune towards San Clemente till 7 o’cl enjoying the cool quiet evening. I then took Ersilia back to her own house, and came home to my 7.30 dinner wh in this hot weather I have in the long hall near the open windows al fresco. Then at 8.30 I went out in gondola & called for Carry Eden to go to see the Serenade– A lovely boat all lit up with a band on board & a chorus of singers. We floating about listening to the music & preceding the boats landing at this house to watch the sight from my own terrace. When the piece that was performed was over we got into the gondola & went by the short cut & small canals to the Eden’s house Palazzo Barbarigo & landed there. Found Mr Eden was still up & we 3 sat on the balcony there & saw the serenade pass again. The sight is always fairy like, always new—the night was splendid—moonlit—without a breath of wind, the sky deep deep blue & against it loomed the great dome of the Salute. Venice is indeed a wonderful place—& one never ceases wondering at the whole thing—whatever the hour or time. I got home soon after 11 ready for bed.
