17 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 17th [July 1903]. Very sultry day & I had a headache & kept my room all day till 4 o’cl when I had to go down to receive Countess Canevaro & her sister & 2 nieces & two Miss Underwoods (US) friends of Emilia Riaño from whom they brought me a letter. Ersilia Canevaro was very funny abt the Queen’s visit to me. She told me it was a great honor & seemed to think I did not fully appreciate it. When they were all gone I went for a walk to get a little exercise which did me good. After dinner I called for Carry Eden & took her out in gondola– A lovely night. There was music at the Exhibition in the gardens & we floated about listening to it. Last night while I was at dinner, Guggenheim came to ask me abt the chair to be copied for the Queen. At the same time came a letter from Marchesa Villamarina enclosing an autograph of the Queen’s sending me 200 lire for the Sailor’s Hospital.
