18 July 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 18th [July 1903]. The fête of the Redentore wh is a great one here. I went out after tea in gondola & walked from the Piazza to the bridge of boats across the Gd Canal & the Giudecca to the Redentore Church. The altar was all lighted with numberless candles & there were flowers in pots very tastefully arranged in every available space even to the top of the columns & round the cupola. Got home to dinner. Mr Woods & Malagola came to dinner & at 9 we went out to see the fête joined the Montalba gondola & stayed out till past 12. There were no fireworks, but a galley grande & a boat lighted up & a band of music– I sent out the servants also with the Sailor’s Inst: people– After floating about to hear the music & see the boats with families sitting round a table with their suppers before them—we tied up our two gondolas to a pole & unpacked our own suppers. The Montalbas had provided royally all sorts of good things—& we were very merry. At 12.15 we had to leave the Montalbas as I wanted to go to the station to see the Queen off for her express special train was to start at 1 A.M. We reached the station soon after 12.30. I & Malagola landed & found the Prefect also waiting there & a few officials, carabiniere, but no one else. Abt ¼ to 1 H.M. arrived in open gondola with Css Brandolin & other gondolas with the Css Papadopoli & Ct Zen, Grimani & Giuccioli. On landing H.M. kissed me & said she was glad to see me there—spoke to the Prefect & went in to the station. The train was ready. The household already in their places. H.M. stood a few minutes talking to people. I took the opportunity of giving the Marchesa Villamarina a parcel with bead necklaces & needles for making them as I knew H.M. had bought beads & could not get the needles, for making the necklaces, at Venice as they are English– I also told her that I had brought a copy of the Bellini portrait of Mahomet I have done wh I wanted to present to H.M. She told H.M. that I had brought her this & she thanked me. At 1 punct. the train started & I came home to bed–
