2 August 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 2nd [August 1903]. Went to morning service & afterwards walked to Hotel Victoria to see Baroness Reinelt who is here for a few days. Home to lunch at 1– At 3 went to call for Aspasie & took her to the Giudecca to see our hospital. We sat in the garden. Sister Clara received & looked very nice in uniform—a grey dress with white cap & apron– I sent Aspasie home in gondola wh also fetched Maria Cozzi. Dr Tommasini, the Consul Zuccato, Clara & Hilda Montalba, Mr & Mrs Merrick & Mrs Gardener & niece, Mr Woods, Genl de Horsey & Mr Guggenheim & his daughter came to tea then & went over the house. All expressed their satisfaction. Mr Merrick as he went out said Open your bag & I will put in a letter.” I found afterwards that said letter contained 100 dollars for the hospital– At 5.30 I took Maria Cozzi back to Venice & went on to Hotel Victoria & took Baroness Reinelt out for a row, we went to the Public gardens & sat there under the trees. Angela R. is in a great state because she is told that gossip here says she paid for a portrait just barely done of Css Anina Morosini. It is a stupid report & not worth thinking of. I dined at 8 & afterwards Mr Harston looked in on his way home from the Institute service & Genl de Horsey came for a little chat & brought me his contribution towards the hospital. He is really poor & cannot do much. Went to bed tired.
