24 September 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 24th [September 1903]. Breakfasted in bed & did not get up till 9. The Princesses went out alone—very happy to feel independent. Connie went out with Malagola. I had a very quiet day & did little else but string bead necklaces. The Princesses went out with Iduna Belmondo in afternoon. I went out in gondola after 3. At 2 Princess Christian held a Hospital Committee meeting & Mr H. Brown & Dr van Someren attended. Sister Clare was also called in. The Princess proposed me on the Committee wh was settled. The arrangements for Monday’s opening ceremony were made. At 4 I went to pay Elsie Cassis a visit who is still in bed & sat with her an hour. Then to the Piazza to buy more beads for necklaces. Mr Woods dined with us & afterwards he accompanied H.R.H., Connie & myself to the sailor’s institute where there were a few sailors & some music was going on– A fireman played the piano in a brilliant manner thumping at times in a way that threatened to destroy the instrument– Some men sung & one recited. At 10 we left God save the King being heartily sung by the company. When H.R.H. got down to the door & walked to her gondola the men all appeared on the balcony & cheered lustily & their struck up singing “She’s a jolly good fellow”– H.R.H. was delighted & promised to go again on Monday.
