25 September 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 25th [September 1903]. Connie went out with the Princesses in morning. At 12 when Malagola returned from his tourné with them he & I went out on foot to S. Moisé to the book binder where I ordered a book to be bound for my cousin Mrs Holmes White. It is to be for a golden wedding present & is the Golden Treasury, with gold clasps & with much gold on the binding & is to cost abt 30 francs. We had to rush home & as it was I got in a minute late for luncheon & the Princesses were waiting for me. Miss Loch is better & was up in the afternoon & went out with us in gondola. We went to the Quattro Fontane on Lido & tied up the gondolas in the shade in the small canal & there made tea without landing– After tea—Miss Loch got into my gondola, Pss Christian into her own with Connie & Pss Victoria & went on for a giro & Miss Loch & I came home & she retired to her bed. I went off again to the station to meet Pss Charlotte of Saxe Meiningen who came to stay with me. Herr Walther of the Hotel Britannia was at the station for the same purpose & I had a long talk with him abt Venetian home politics. He says the authorities are so afraid of losing the votes of the gondoliers that they never dare to contradict them & in consequence they do as they like & are most insolent & unmanagable. I spoke to him abt our New Hospital & he said he wd come to the opening & support the idea. The train was very late so that when Pss Charlotte arrived looking very pale & sad we had to rush off home to be ready for 8 o’cl dinner. She brought her maid & 2 dogs. My house is now quite full. We threaded beads in the evening all of us.
