26 September 1903 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 26th [September 1903]. The Princesses all breakfasted downstairs together. Malagola took out the Christians at 10 & I took out Princess Charlotte. We went to Moses the antiquity shop—wh she bought things & then to Missiaglia the jeweller & only got back after 12. Pss Charlotte brought me a lovely umbrella with enamel & gold handle. After lunch the Belmondos came to call on Pss Charlotte. At 3 we all went out for the afternoon “gita” I with Pss Christian & Pss Charlotte & Miss Loch & Connie with Pss Victoria. We went to Sa Rosa near St Erasmus a most lovely spot on an island near Sta Parte where there is a tiny church with a miniature Campanile. We tied up our gondolas & had tea & then our gondola went towards the open sea where by standing up we could see over the “diga” the sea was calm & blue & beautiful & coming home there was a lovely sunset & reddy golden glory. Dined at 7.30. At 9 we went all but Miss Loch, to Lady Helen Vincents to hear her sister sing Lady Cynthia Graham. She has a fine voice & is a splendid Juno-like looking young woman. The two sisters were a pretty picture—one singing & Lady Helen playing her accompaniments on the piano. She so frail & slight & fair & Lady C. so stout & florid & dark. Pss [illegible word] was also there & played a piano duet with Mr Sargent the painter. There was a Mme Le Blanc her friend, Mr Webber, & a Ct Costa & Mr Gervase Ker. We remained till 10.30 & then returned home our gondolas being open. The night was warm & splendid & starlit.
